gerald gaus’ the order of public reason: a theory of freedom and morality in a diverse and bounded world is a big book in its title and its length and much more importantly in its intellectual ambition, breadth, complexity, and power. gaus draws upon an extensive knowledge of recent and not so recent moral and political philosophy, game theory, moral psychology, experimental economics, experimental philosophy, and evolutionary theory. in this account and preliminary assessment of the order of public reason i seek to focus on some of the most important structural features of gaus’ doctrine and to go on to identify what seem to me to be some of its core potential problems. almost certainly i will be under-reporting and under- appreciating certain features of gaus’ position and seeing potential problems where gaus sees solutions.
