i thank all secretarial staff who made my participation in 1’st iranian mining engineering conference possible, especially dr.irannajad and dr.khodadadi for their big coordination efforts during past few days.i am also grateful to dr.farzanegan who sincerely invited me to this important iranian mining event.dr.farzanegan suggested that i speak about how governmental research funding agencies, mining corporations and researchers work together in canada to foster applied research in mining.what a wonderful idea, i first thought.but as i thought more about it, i came to realize that i would be faced with two difficulties.first, i am not an expert on the topic of how applied research should be supported.second, i am not sure that the canadian model works so well that i would wish that it should be exported abroad or even that it would be applicable to the islamic republic of iran.however, i have been involved in mining applied research all my life, mostly, but not only in canada.my first research project was in 1971 in an underground mine, in northern canada, as an undergraduate summer student.most of my research has been jointly supported by canadian federal and provincial agencies, and i owe a tremendous debt to mining corporations that have and continue to support my research.
