     at the filtration circuit of the zarand coal washing plant, the flotation concentrate is filtered in order to meet the required moisture for shipping. since 85% of the concentrate is smaller than 0.5 mm, vacuum disk filters are used. due to the low performance of the cotton type filtering media they were replaced by nylon type filtering media. the results of tests showed that the nylon type media with the cake thickness of 17.6 mm and moisture of 24.8% had a higher performance compared to the cotton type filter cloth. the cake thickness and the moisture of the latter type were found to be 9.1 mm and 24.8%, respectively. five types of filtering media namely, coarse texture metallic media, satin pattern nylon type, metallic with fine pattern, cotton with twill pattern and nylon with plain pattern were evaluated by performing various tests. among the five media types it was concluded that the nylon type with the cake thickness of 22.5 mm and the moisture content of 22.9% had the highest efficiency. fine pattern metallic media with the cake thickness of 21 mm and the moisture of 23.5% due to the ease of cake removal was rated second. the twill pattern cotton type media with the cake thickness of 21 mm and the moisture content close to the other types can be used which could provide enough durability against tear and wear.
