in order to reduce the costs of surface mining operations, hauling systems of these mines are adopting larger off-highway trucks that are capable of hauling increased payload. however, these trucks run on mine haul roads, which have been empirically designed, and relying mostly on local design experiences. inadequate design of haul roads, which encompasses the selection of inappropriate wearing course materials and maintenance intervals, will result in rapid road degeneration and an increase in road surface defects. these defects lead to increases in vehicle operation and road maintenance costs and reduction of safety and operational efficiency. hence, selection of adequate wearing course materials and maintenance frequency can play an important role in overcoming these problems. the aim of this paper is to predict a suitable maintenance frequency for chadormalu iron ore mine haul roads. therefore, after investigating and characterizing the engineering and geotechnical properties of the mine haul road wearing course materials, the defect scores of the roads were calculated using the south african defect score progression models, based on the mine material specifications. these defect scores, which were calculated daily following last maintenance activity, were compared with another model for the maximum defect score. finally, the interval that related to the lowest average defect score was chosen as the required maintenance frequency for that particular haul road.
