this paper presents the results of the investigations concerning the influence of multivalent cations on the selective flotation of smithsonite-quartz using oleic acid as the collector, and depressing these cations to prevent their effects on the separation of smithsonite-quartz. the selective oleic acid microflotation of pure smithsonite from pure quartz was studied under different concentration of pb(ii) and zn(ii) as the dissolved ions, that could be present in the real flotation pulp, at different ph regions, also sodium silicate and sodium sulphide as depressants of the dissolved ions were studied. it has been demonstrated that the maximum recoveries of quartz were due to the presence of the hydroxy complexes of the type pboh+ or znoh+, which were absorbed on the negatively charged surface of quartz thereby the absorption of the anionic collector could be possible. sodium silicate and sodium sulphide were used in depressing activated quartz. the results show that sodium silicate could depress activated quartz partially, and sodium sulphide depressed both activated quartz and smithsonite. to confirm the microflotation results, batch flotation was carried out.
