     on march 11th 2011, a massive scale earthquake of magnitude 9.0 occurred on off the pacific coast of tohoku region, japan named in short as "the 2011 tohoku earthquake". large earthquakes can generate far-source long-period ground motions consist primarily of surface waves in distant sedimentary basins with the help of path effects. large-scale structures such as tall buildings, big storage tanks, etc. can resonate with long-period ground motion because their own natural periods are in the same period band with the motion. such long-period ground motions can even be damaging in some circumstances. the purpose of this study, is to review several case histories of large flexible structures behavior due to the past long-period ground motion. we will then describe the important features of the 2011 tohoku earthquake by analyzing the recorded ground motion time histories from the viewpoint of long-period ground motion. the obtained findings highlight the potential vulnerability of modern large-scale structures to large earthquakes.
