recent major earthquakes have proven that connection elements are the most important and vulnerable parts of a steel moment resisting frame. as well, analytical investigations have revealed that connections with double-i built-up columns which have been used extensively in high seismic regions in iran, exhibit different behavior comparing to the connections with h-shaped columns. due to the large out-of-plane deformation of the column cover plate that connects two i-shaped sections; the commonly used moment connections designed based on the classic beam theory, cause semi-rigid behavior. the objective of this study is to build on previous studies; and to investigate the stress distribution pattern in stiffened i-beam to double-i built up column connections with horizontal and vertical through plates and external tstiffeners. in this study, the application of internal through plates with external triangular rib plates has been modeled and investigated. furthermore, a pair of doubler plates is applied in-plane with t-stiffeners flanges in order to provide a smooth force flow path in the retrofitted connections with t-stiffeners. the modified configurations induce a plastic hinge away from the column face. moreover, the column cover plate excessive deformations are significantly eliminated; and stress is uniformly distributed in the connection region.
