ethics is the study of the characteristics of morals, and involves the moral choices made by individuals as they interact with other persons. engineers need to be aware of ethics as they make choices during their professional practice of engineering. several studies conducted across the world suggest that the majority of engineering failures can be traced to a deficiency in engineering ethics, as asce so plainly states: “ethics is a cornerstone of civil engineering practice.” engineers encounter difficult ethical problems in their practice. in many ways, these problems are like design or construction problems: they are complex, often ill-defined; resolving them involves an iterative process of analysis and synthesis; and there can be more than one acceptable solution. investigating engineering ethics’ codes in different countries such as the us, canada and the uk illustrated that there is a need for a code of ethics which is related to engineering, especially civil engineering in iran. the goals of this paper include: a. fostering an increased awareness of ethical behavior b. offering codes of ethics for professional civil engineering societies in iran hopefully, this paper will invigorate and supplement the discussion of engineering ethics in our country.
