     regarding developments in computational hardware, it was basically rebirth for smoothed particle hydrodynamics (sph) as a lagrangian, meshless, numerical method. sphysics is one of the best open source codes based on this method. notwithstanding the benefits of the software, it still needs to be developed for modelling different phenomena. in this paper, by means of a berm breakwater as an obstacle, a numerical flume with a progressive wave, in sphysics has been simulated. the variation in water profile and other flow parameters has been monitored. meanwhile, a finite volume software simulation, is the main comparison tool to check numerical results of both models. by comparing finite volume model with sph model, the models have been verified. also the sph method accuracy, regarding its basics and original characteristics, may not exactly meet other common computational methods yet, but it surely can pave the way for simulating natural phenomena in researches.
