    compression strength can be known as the main mechanical property of concrete, so the efforts to improving it have continued. in addition to optimization of concrete's material to increase the compression strength, using of chemical and mineral additives are new methods. using diatomite as a mineral additive and natural pozzolan is a method to improve the compression strength. adding of diatomite to concrete mix cause to active silica of it interact with the available free hydroxide calcium in the capillary tubes of concrete that create the insoluble crystalline silicate and finally the structure of cement paste will be dense and the compression strength will increase. in this paper, five mix designs which contain diatomite 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 percent of cement weight were considered. totally 45 cylindrical sample which the diameter of its base is 10 cm and has 20 cm high were formed. samples were cured in the laboratory condition and common temperature in the water bath, then all of them were broken by universal device at the age of 14, 28 and 90 days. at less ages (14 days old) there is a kind of chaos in the pattern of increasing of compression strength, this event may be as a result of diatomite's slow pozzulan function, but at older ages, in all of the samples with the increasing of diatomite, compression strength will be increased and the variation rate in the all of percent of usage of diatomite is nearly constant.
