Journal of Biomechanics publishes reports of original and substantial findings using the principles of mechanics to explore biological problems. Analytical and experimental papers may be submitted, and the journal accepts original articles, surveys and perspective articles (usually by Editorial invitation only), book reviews and letters to the Editor. The criteria for acceptance of manuscripts include excellence, novelty, significance, clarity, conciseness and interest to the readership.

Individuals with spastic cerebral palsy (SCP) exhibit restricted joint range of motion and increased joint stiffness due to structural alterations of their muscles. Little is known about which muscle–tendon structures are responsible for these alterations. The aim of this study was to compare the passive mechanics of the ankle joint and medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle in young adults with S...

It has been reported that the center of rotation of each vertebral body is located posterior to the vertebral body center. Moreover, it has been suggested that an optimized follower load (FL) acts posterior to the vertebral body center. However, the optimal position of the FL with respect to typical biomechanical characteristics regarding spinal stabilization, such as joint compressive force, shea...
The ultrasonography contributes to investigate in vivo tendon force–strain relationship during isometric contraction. In previous studies, different methods are available to estimate the tendon strain, using different loading rates and models to fit the tendon force–strain relationship. This study was aimed to propose a standard method to characterize the in vivo te...
Numerical models commonly account for elastic inhomogeneity in cortical bone using power-law scaling relationships with various measures of tissue density, but limited experimental data exists for anatomic variation in elastic anisotropy. A recent study revealed anatomic variation in the magnitude and anisotropy of elastic constants along the entire femoral diaphysis of a single human femur ( Espi...
Findings from animal experiments are sometimes contradictory to the idea that the tendon structure is a simple elastic spring in series with muscle fibers, and suggest influence of muscle contraction on the tendon mechanical properties. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of muscle contraction levels on the force–length relationship of the human Achilles tendon ...
A meeting in Vienna in October 2010 brought together researchers using Virtual Anthropology (VA) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) in order to explore the benefits and problems facing a collaboration between the two fields. FEA is used to test mechanical hypotheses in functional anatomy and VA complements and augments this process by virtue of its tools for acquiring data, for segmenting and prepa...
The spinal cord is physiologically stretched along the craniocaudal axis, and is subjected to tensile stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the tensile stress on morphological plasticity of the spinal cord under compression and decompression condition. The C1–T2 spinal column was excised from 4 rabbits. The laminae and lateral masses were removed. After excision of s...
We investigated the changes in the technical ability of force application/orientation against the ground vs. the physical capability of total force production after a multiple-set repeated sprints series. Twelve male physical education students familiar with sprint running performed four sets of five 6-s sprints (24 s of passive rest between sprints, 3 min between sets). Sprints were performed fro...
Non-articulated energy storage and return prosthetic feet lack any true articulation or obvious point of rotation. This makes it difficult to select a joint center about which to estimate their kinetics. Despite this absence of any clear point of rotation, methods for estimating the kinetic performance of this class of prosthetic feet typically assume that they possess a fixed center of rotation a...
In a variety of applications, inertial sensors are used to estimate spatial parameters by double integrating over time their coordinate acceleration components. In human movement applications, the drift inherent to the accelerometer signals is often reduced by exploiting the cyclical nature of gait and under the hypothesis that the velocity of the sensor is zero at some point in stance. In this st...
