the effectiveness and feasibility of the continuous sliding mode control (csmc) is investigated through comparison with conventional linear quadratic regulator (lqr) control in isolated bridges. when these bridges are subjected to ground motions with large intensity, the deck displacement becomes excessively large. so, in this study three design goals are studied: reduction of column response, reduction of bearing response and reduction of both responses. the column-isolator-deck system can be idealized as a two-degree-of-freedom lumped mass system. several approaches are used for the determination of sliding surface as an important parameter in this control algorithm. the results show that the sliding mode control with appropriate sliding surfaces achieves outstanding control performance and is more effective in mitigating seismic responses of nonlinear isolated bridges.
